Our Malayan Tapir Says…
I know that I am a very funny animal to look at but that’s just the way I am, and long my nose can be very helpful! If something scares me I’ll run to the nearest river or lake and dive in, and use my snout as a snorkel, waiting until the threat has passed. Sometimes I will sink to the bottom of the river and go for a stroll along the bottom. My fish friends then go to work nibbling at my skin, helping to keep me clean and parasite free! Unfortunately this life is threatened by hunting and also my habitat being destroyed. We want to continue to bring smiles to all those that see us, but I’m really scared that soon there won’t be any of us left.

udopt'r choice
The tapir is a quiet and reserved animal that is not overly sociable. Its typical day involves using the well-worn tracks it creates in its habitat to forage for food, or it goes basking in the water found in a lake or pool. The tapir is comfortable in forests and hotter climates. It’s anything but athletic but still manages to create for itself a comfortable lifestyle in its small local habitat it calls home. If a tapir is threatened, rather than attack it will find beat a peaceful retreat and wait until the danger has passed.

Did you know?
- When a tapir is scared it can run and hide in the water and then use its long nose as a snorkel!
- Officially the tapir is classified as an odd-toed ungulate, which in practice means that it has an odd number of toes. Bet you didn’t know that!
- A tapir might look small but in fact when fully grown it can weigh-in at over 45 stone!
- A tapir takes 13-months to produce an offspring. That’s a full four and a half months longer than human beings. Because of this the tapir produce less offspring over the years, resulting in lower tapir populations.
- Malayan tapirs can be found in Malaysia and Indonesia in Southeast Asia.
