Incredibly Rare Footage Of Live Wild Birth Of False Killer Whale

It is incredibly rare to even spot a false killer whale if you are off the coast of Southern California. Recently however some lucky boat passengers in that part of the world didn’t just get the privilege of seeing false killer whales in the wild, they had the opportunity to witness what can only be described as a one in a life time even, the live birth of a calf.

Calf appeared suddenly

The false killer whale is a cousin to the better-known orca and a pod of 40 began swimming next to a catamaran owned by Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari. A couple began pushing up against the side of the catamaran and according to a company statement a sudden burst of blood appeared followed by a new born calf. A number of pod members then surrounded the baby whale and spent ten minutes lifting the new born to the surface as it quickly learned to swim, said the captain of the catamaran.

Crew members were emotional

False killer whales rarely swim in the waters of California, preferring warmer waters instead. According to the captain of the catamaran, the last time he saw one was back in 2014 and prior to that sighting it had been a decade. The captain says he has never ever seen anything like that in his entire career on the water and one member of the crew said it was his most emotional moment ever.
