Chinese Man Realises His Pet Dogs Are In Fact Black Bears
A man from China had a big surprise in store for him when he learned that is beloved pet dogs were not actually dogs but were in fact two black bears. Mr. Wang Kayui of Yunnan village purchased the cubs a couple of years ago from Vietnam. He bought them whilst working on a banana plantation on the border between China and Vietnam.
Cubs were well behaved
According to People’s Daily Online, Mr. Wang arrived at the startling realisation that his puppies were actually an endangered species after reading some conservation leaflets. The story says that in the beginning, Mr. Wang did not think anything was unusual about his pets and groomed them every day. He said the cubs were very well behaved but liked to eat a lot.
At first everything seemed fine and then it wasn’t
Mr. Wang began to sense something was wrong as the cubs began to grow up and started to look less like dogs and had a greater desire for food, weighing in at nearly 100 pounds each. He added that the cubs began to behave quite unlike dogs, by killing and eating his pet chickens.
Owner realised after reading some leaflets
Despite all those clues it was only when Mr. Wang read some leaflets that were issued by the Public Security Bureau that he understood he had been illegally keeping protected endangered species. After consulting with his family, Mr. Wang decided it was best for the two bears to be handed over to the local Forest Public Security Bureau, in the hope the agency would be able to find a good home for the animals.
Cubs were sent to a rescue centre
At the end of June, local police arrived at Mr. Wang’s home and took the bears in the cages in which he had been keeping them. The bears were then transported to the Yunnan Wild Animal Rescue Centre. Mr. Feng Lingui a spokesperson for the rescue centre says the animals have been classified as two Asian Black Bears. There was one male and one female and both animals appear to be in good health.
Black bears are dangerous
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nation, Asian Black Bears are classified as being vulnerable. This is because they suffer from being poached for their body parts and are on the receiving end of deforestation. It is not safe to keep the animals as pets because Black Bears have been known to attack humans without any provocation.
