Port Lympne Excited To Welcome New Gorillas

The Aspinall Foundation has some very exciting news. The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is expecting a new family of gorillas to move into the Palace of the Apes. The attraction has laid empty since its previous residents Djala and family made the move to live free in the wild in Gabon. Since they left the park has made a number of alterations to the enclosure as it seeks to prepare it for the new residents who have already moved in.

Port Lympne Pleased To Announce The Arrival Of A Cheetah Litter

The Aspimall Foundation’s Port Lympne Wild Animal Park is delighted to announce the birth of the first set of cheetah cubs at the conservation park in almost three decades.

The cheetah, which is affectionately known as Izzy gave birth to four cubs in September and the animals handlers are pleased with the progress the cubs have made so far.

Rich Barnes, Head of Large Carnivores commented: “We are really chuffed that as a first time Mum Izzy’s done really well. It is quite difficult to breed cheetahs as the process is quite different to other species, so we are really pleased that it has all gone well.”

Guide Dog Makes Entrance Into House of Lords

Recently the first ever guide dog to be formally introduced to Peers entered the House of Lords.

Chris Holmes who now carries the title of Lord Holmes of Richmond took an oath of allegiance at a special ceremony in Westminster before the Lord Speaker with his guide dog sat firmly at his feet.

Help Stop Oil Exploration In Virunga National Park

Starting last month, the film Virunga starring UK Actress Anna Friel is being shown as ODEON theatres throughout the UK. The film is just three minutes long but takes the viewer on a dramatic journey across snow capped mountains and lush tropical rainforest, highlighting an astonishing diversity of wildlife which includes elephants and gorillas.

The Aspinall Foundation To Establish Scottish Wildcat Breeding Centre

The Aspinall Foundation (TAF) says it is launching an initiative to save the Scottish Wildcat which is now critically endangered as a result of interbreeding with feral domestic cats.

TAF will send a conservation team to build a custom wildcat breeding centre located on island of the Scottish west coast called Carna. The breeding centre will also serve as a sanctuary for pure Scottish wildcats whose numbers are estimated to be less than 35 in the wild.

Businesses Break The Law By Denying Access to Guide Dogs

Many businesses across the United Kingdom, by denying the partially sighted and blind access with their guide dogs are breaking the law.

According to the latest data from Guide Dogs for the blind, ordinary shops, transport services and cafes are refusing access to the guide dog owners.

Restaurants were the worst offenders with 24 per cent of reported incidents and 60 per cent of all refusals. Public transport was the second worst offender with nearly a quarter of all reports with taxi’s in particular soaking up two thirds of those complaints.

Award Given For Most Eco Friendly Farmer In UK

Nicholas Watts who runs the Vine House Farm up in Lincolnshire has been nurturing wildlife on his farms for over two decades and as a result of his conservation efforts has won the award of being the UK’s most nature friendly farmer.

Mr. Watts won the RSPB Telegraph Nature of Farming Award by inspiring voters and impressing judges with his efforts at increasing the numbers of species which are in decline. Mr. Watts firmly believes that both farming and conservation go hand in hand.

Elephant Poaching A Crisis

Dr Kate Evans runs Elephants for Africa an organisation she founded back in 2007. Her interests in these magnificent animals started when she began researching adolescent male elephants in the Okavango Delta nearly a decade ago.

“Elephants have always been my passion, and growing up the poaching crisis of the 1970s and 80s had a massive impact on the journey that my life would take. Since 2002 I have been studying the elephants of Botswana, home to the largest remaining population in the world. My particular interest is male elephants and their ecological and social requirements.” Dr Evans said.
