There is no better phrase to describe this trio than “opposites attract”. A Bengal tiger, an African lion and an American black bear are the best of friends, living together at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Georgia. In fact, they are such good friends that they have been given the collective nickname BLT which is an acronym for bear, lion and tiger. The fact that they live together is extremely unusual because when you put different species of wild animals together it is usually quite dangerous says Allison Hedgecoth who is the curator at the sanctuary.
“Even though they live in a three-acre enclosure, they’re usually within 100 feet of each other. That’s proof that they’re not just coexisting or cohabiting, they actually do enjoy each other’s company.” Ms. Hedgecoth said.
See each other as family
The group of animals have been living together for 15 years because they have a shared traumatic past. According to Ms. Hedgecoth the animals were rescued from the basement of a house owned by a drug dealer and as a result they see each other as family members and don’t know any different.
Rescued from horrible conditions
The BLT were found with severe injuries as well as parasites, however the condition of Baloo the bear was by far the worst. He was found tightly strapped to a harness which had not been loosened as the bear grew. This meant that the harness started to grow into Baloo’s skin and when he was rescued, the sanctuary had to surgically remove it.
Will live together forever
That surgery was the only time the trio had ever been separated. Now, if any of member of the group requires a medical procedure, the other two are brought along to provide comfort. Ms. Hedgecoth says there was another occasion where a bear and tiger shared an enclosure as cubs however once the animals starting maturing at about two years old, it was obvious they had to be separated. However, this is not the case with the BLT who are likely to live out their days in one another’s company.
