Amazing Blue Tit Photo by RSPB Member
Check out this amazing picture taken by RSPB member Tim Clifton, who managed to capture a blue tit falling over as it grappled with nesting material in his garden!
Tim is an amateur photographer from St. Leonards on Sea in Sussex, but you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference judging from this awesome photo, it’s hilarious! He has been following the RSPB’s suggestion to put bird bedding out for quite some time, and has been really pleased with the amount of different breeds that have been taking advantage of his generosity.

Since I put the nesting material out in my garden I’ve had no end of interest from blue tits and sparrows; sometimes there are two or three getting a beak-full at the same time. In fact, a few days after I took this picture, the supply had completely gone, so it was obviously greatly received. It’s been fantastic watching the birds come and go, and knowing I’m helping to give them a home in my garden.
RSPB charity officials have been recommending that us humans make an effort to help the birds to build nests by putting out a selection of suitable materials in the garden for them to choose from. You can actually purchase nesting material if you like, but wool is just as useful, as is pet hair, and even OUR OWN hair!
The late Spring has caused many birds to be late in building their nests, so a little helping hand from us will do them the world of good. Unless, of course, they have a bit of a tumble when they are trying to grab it!
RSPB’s head of wildlife enquiries, Val Osborne, said –
At this time of year there is normally plenty of shrubbery for birds to make safe nests in and hide from predators, but the late start to spring has meant many leaves are yet to come out. Instead of their usual spots, birds may opt to build homes in more unusual places as well as ivy and other evergreens, so gardeners should stay alert and be vigilant when pottering about this weekend. Holding off on trimming bushes or cutting hedges is one of the main things we’d like people to do
Due to the terrible weather, why not help the birds out this Spring by leaving some extra materials for them to use for building their nests. We’re not saying cut off all your hair and create some kind of uber wig nest, but a bit of wool would really help them out, and you’ll have a lot more beautiful birds in your garden. Let’s hope they can manage to stay on their feet!
