It can be confusing for kids when they visit the zoo. This is because the animals they see on wildlife documentaries violently fighting for food are suddenly transformed into docile animals that submissively sit behind glass walls. On some occasions the animals just sit there and on other occasions they display signs of zoochosis where they rock back and forth or hit themselves. Every once in a while, animals in captivity will really lash out as a result of the frustration that comes from being imprisoned.
Animals are deeply frustrated
The video above is a clear example of an animal that is deeply frustrated. The video shows a young girl pressing her face against the window of a lion exhibit at a zoo. To begin with the lion shows no reaction and just stares back at her. However, the lion quickly becomes agitated with the situation and mild entertainment transforms into a show of violence. The young girl presses her lips against the glass and blows a kiss to the big cat who responds by standing up on his hind legs and clawing at the glass.
Will respond violently when taunted
Last year a similar thing happened at a Nebraska zoo when a young girl at the gorilla exhibit banged her chest and was charged at by a Silverback. Whilst such incidents may seem amusing, the reality is much more serious. These animals are in an undeniable states of distress. Whilst they may not act like there is something wrong 24 hours a day, such moments remind us not only that these animals should be in the wild, but also they these animals are acutely aware they are imprisoned. It comes as no surprise that when these animals are taunted they will respond violently.
