Meet The Cute Boxing Day Baby Pygmy Hippo

This little fella is just one month old and is already ready for his close up. He arrived on the scene on Boxing Day last year and is so cute that simply watching this baby pygmy hippo chow down on some straw is bringing joy to thousands of people all over the world.

The video was posted on YouTube by the Zoological Society of London to introduce  the latest addition to Whipsnade Zoo to the world. The hippo which has yet to be named can be seen wiggling his ears and yawning whilst he swims around for the general public.

According to the Zoo, the hippo’s mum named Flora is 28 years old and is an experienced mother that has been suffering from cancer. Despite that fact, the disease did not affect her pregnancy and the little one is doing well. He’s not just healthy, he is downright lovable.

“His personality’s starting to develop. He’s becoming a lot more confident and a bit more inquisitive. He’s spending a little bit more time away from mum, just investigating his surroundings.” said Steve White, the hippo’s zoo keeper.

Though it is easy to get caught up in just how cute this little hippo is, Mr. White stressed just how important the birth is. This is because the species is quite endangered in the wild. In fact males are so rare that this latest addition is bound to help the population in its conservation.
