Fun Facts About The Lion

03rd December 2013 UNDER Blog

It’s common knowledge that the lion is symbol of power and strength, and if you are lucky enough to see a lion up close you can be sure it is a spine tingling experience. Here are some fun facts about the lion.

  • Of all the big cats, the lion is the most sociable living in groups called prides that can number as many as 15.
  • The female lions do most of the hunting whilst the male lions defend territory, what is really surprising despite the division of labour, the male lions always eat first.
  • Lions are being threatened by loss of habitat
  • Lions used to be found in Asia Africa and even as far as Europe, currently however most lions are found in Africa and you can find the Asiatic lion in India where approximately 350 to 400 remain.
  • You can hear a lions roar as far as five miles away
  • The lion is fast over short distances, hitting as much as 50 miles per hour. Not only that but the lion can jump as far as 36 feet.
  • Many people refer to the lion as the “king of the jungle” this is actually quite different to the truth because the lion actually lives in plains and grassland. The misnomer is probably the result of the incorrect association between Africa and jungles.
  • One way to tell the age of a male lion is to look at his mane. The darker it is the older the lion.
  • When a lion walks its heels don’t touch the ground
  • Lions can be lazy and may sleep as many as 20 hours a day.
